What is an almshouse charity?

Almshouses have a long tradition in this country.

All were founded with similar aims, namely to enable people to remain living in their own communities when they are no longer able to afford to pay the cost of accommodation in the area. As such they are one of the oldest forms of social housing providing accommodation to those in need.

Today over 35,000 people live in almshouses in the UK.
